Institute of Genetic Research

The IRG - Institute for Genetic Research, based in Naples, was founded in 1994 by a team of highly specialized researchers in the field of medical genetics and fertility.

The Institute is committed to the study and diagnosis of genetic causes of infertility, with particular attention to genetic risks during pregnancy, including hereditary diseases and chromosomal abnormalities that can affect the health of the unborn child.

Clinical and diagnostic activities are constantly supported by intense scientific research, validated and documented through international collaborations and networks. This approach guarantees high quality standards, continuous learning, and scientific reliability.

The Institute's expertise focuses on prenatal genetic diagnosis and also includes the study of infectious diseases at the molecular level, as well as spontaneous and recurrent miscarriage. Special attention is paid to the role of polymorphic variants in immune tolerance and maternal endometrial receptivity, as well as the development and implementation of molecular tests for assessing immunogenetic predisposition.

Between 1999 and 2008, the Institute collaborated with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Neonatology at the Second University of Naples, providing specialized genetic counseling. In this context, cytogenetic, biochemical, and molecular analyses were performed on samples of amniotic fluid, fetal blood, and chorionic villi.

Since 2000, in synergy with clinical activity, the Institute has been among the first in Italy to introduce combined first trimester screening for the evaluation of the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, also including the most recent screening methods.

non-invasive (NIPT).

More recently, screening for early preeclampsia has also been started.

Between 2015 and 2025, the IRG further expanded its research activities, focusing on the immunogenetics of infertility and delving deeper into the interactions between the immune system and embryonic implantation.

In this context, the Institute has participated in high-profile international research projects, in collaboration with leading scientific partners such as Merck and IVIRMA Global.

These studies have analyzed the role of immunogenetics in Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAP) protocols, highlighting how immune factors and genetic variants can influence endometrial receptivity, embryo implantation, and the clinical outcomes of treatments.

These activities have contributed to the development and implementation of advanced molecular tests for the assessment of immunogenetic predisposition, improving the diagnostic and therapeutic approach for couples with infertility and recurrent miscarriages.
